Rumors

I'm not with the Army wives community right now, since I chose to move to be with family during the deployment. I have no doubt that it would have been a terrific support system if I had stayed. However, I know that Army wife communities can sometimes become rumor mills, especially during deployments. This is something I thought I would not have to deal since I moved away.

However, apparently rumors exist among the soldiers overseas too. The registration for the Chicago Marathon (which is in October) is about to open. When I told James I was thinking about registering as soon as possible as it's supposed to fill up pretty quick, he told me to wait a few days. What?! 

He wasn't going to tell me because he didn't want to get my hopes up, but there have been rumors that their requests for R&R leave were denied, because it is switching to a 9 month deployment*. Rumors. So that means I need to wait on Chicago Marathon, since we would be back home in Washington at that time.

The guys that have the first couple slots for R&R leave not too long after the Chicago Marathon registration opens. If they leave, then it's probably going to stay at 12 months. Probably. You know it's the Army, so they can always change their mind. Multiple times. So I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but of course that's impossible. If he gets switched to 9 months, then it would be even longer before I see him but then he would be home. If those guys do get leave, I'm gonna go ahead and register for the marathon. Obviously, I would prefer the former.

So guess what I'm praying for these days.. really hard.

*Soldiers on 12 month deployments get 2 weeks R&R leave sometime during the deployment. Soldiers on 9 month deployments don't, but of course they get to come home sooner.

    I am kinda torn on what I would rather have. A 9 month deployment would be shorter but I just love R&R so much. I hope you are able to get what you are wishing for :)

    I sometimes with that I lived on post so that I could be around other Army wives. Being surrounded by civilians during deployment feels isolating. (At least it has for me so far.) But I'm glad that I'm not around the rumor mill. I've gotten some FRG e-mails dispelling rumors floating around. Any more rumor exposure than that would stress me out.

    I'm not sure if the year long or 9 month deployment would be better. I'll cross my fingers that things work out for the best for y'all. I hope you're hanging in there!*

Ranger Care Package & Florida Update

I got a letter last night! The bad news is that he said his chances of recycling were pretty high. He said that he heard rumors that his company had the harshest graders and they also said that they would grade officers harder than the enlisted guys. Great. So I'm praying hard. If he recycles, it pushes back graduation almost a month. He did include a food wish list! He said he was craving baked goods after all of the processed MREs. Ranger students can receive care packages at the end of each phase. Otherwise, they aren't allowed to be sent food, except for non-caffeinated gum. I've been putting gum sticks in each of his letters. He'll be able to bring the food and magazines I send him on the 4 hour bus ride back to Fort Benning after Phase 3. His wishlist included: Cake Mix Cookies Trail Mix Puppy Chow (yes, he underlined this one) Cheese-its Beefy Jerky Pepperoni Slices Peanut M&Ms Magazines (like Runner's World and Outdoor) So last night I ha

MilSO Care Package: Deployment Survival Kit

Yep, you read that right. A care package for MilSOs. I decided that MilSOs (Military Significant Others) should get care packages sometimes too. I got the idea from this really cute Deployment Survival Kit that I found on Pinterest by Scraptastic Voyage. I stole most of the ideas from there, so be sure to check out hers too. I have two girlfriends whose men are about to go through deployments, so I made one for each of them. I took pictures of all the things that I included.
