Half and Full Marathon Training

The Chicago Marathon is in a little over 4 months. That seems pretty far away, but my training plan is for 18 weeks so marathon training actually starts todayIt's been marked on my calendar since February when I signed up. Feels really sweet that it's finally here.  

I've mentioned before that I really want to break 1:50 in a half marathon. This is a little problematic since the marathon training that I'm using offers no speedwork. I'm pretty sure speedwork is what enabled me to run my 1:54.

So I'm combining Hal Higdon's half marathon intermediate plan with the marathon intermediate 1 plan. Basically adding in the midweek speedwork (and maybe some hills?). I only planned it up to the my half marathon on week 7 though and we'll see after that. Technically I'm supposed to do a half on week 9, but is anyone really able to coordinate the races exactly anyway? And I have another half marathon scheduled for week 14. Hmm. Maybe it will be possible break 1:50 at one of those? The second one in September seems more likely since it might not be as hot. But the D corral at the Chicago Marathon might already be full at that point..

Also, the 18-week plan is kind of a countdown in itself. The Chicago Marathon is about two months before James gets home. Crossing off each of these workouts is gonna be awesome.

  1. I ran quite a few races during my full training, and they rarely matched up with what I had on tap for the day. I know that some people run extra before or after a race to get more mileage. I'm not so good at that. (I'm usually tapped out after a race.)

    Good luck with your training! It's exciting that it's starting now! It will help the time go by faster, at least it did for me. Full training was by far the best part of deployment. It's good for your stress, it gives you a goal to focus on, it makes you feel good about yourself. I can't wait to read all about your training adventures!*

  2. Good luck with your training! I am not an avid runner at all but I am hoping to change that soon because I need to be more active and get my body back to the shape it needs to be in. Do you have any tips for runners who are just getting started?

    1. Thanks Emily! That's awesome you want to start running more. I'm not any kind of running expert but I can tell you this much from experience: The most important thing is to get fitted with a good pair of running shoes at a good running store if you haven't already. It's gonna cost more, but it's so important to make sure you're in the right kind of shoe for you. Soo many people start running in bad shoes for them and they end up in pain they shouldn't be having and think they hate running.

      Second, build up gradually. There are several different couch to 5k plans out there that have a really nice gradual build-up so it helps you not get burned out or injured. You could do that casually or actually sign up for a 5k if you wanted.

    2. Thanks, I don't know about the good running shoes though. I am in Germany right now and not sure where I would go for that. Haha! Is there a brand that tends to be better than others?
